  7.   1. That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which
  8. we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our
  9. hands have handled, of the Word of life;
  10.  
  11.   2. (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear
  12. witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the
  13. Father, and was manifested unto us;)
  14.  
  15.   3. That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that
  16. ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is
  17. with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
  18.  
  19.   4. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be
  20. full.
  21.  
  22.   5. This then is the message which we have heard of him, and
  23. declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at
  24. all.
  25.  
  26.   6. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in
  27. darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
  28.  
  29.   7. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have
  30. fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son
  31. cleanseth us from all sin.
  32.  
  33.   8. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the
  34. truth is not in us.
  35.  
  36.   9. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us
  37. our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
  38.  
  39.   10. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and
  40. his word is not in us.
  41.

  43.                             CHAPTER 2
  44.  
  45.  
  46.   1. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye
  47. sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father,
  48. Jesus Christ the righteous:
  49.  
  50.   2. And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's
  51. only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
  52.  
  53.   3. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his
  54. commandments.
  55.  
  56.   4. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments,
  57. is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
  58.  
  59.   5. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God
  60. perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
  61.  
  62.   6. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to
  63. walk, even as he walked.
  64.  
  65.   7. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old
  66. commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment
  67. is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
  68.  
  69.   8. Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is
  70. true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true
  71. light now shineth.
  72.  
  73.   9. He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is
  74. in darkness even until now.
  75.  
  76.   10. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there
  77. is none occasion of stumbling in him.
  78.  
  79.   11. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh
  80. in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that
  81. darkness hath blinded his eyes.
  82.  
  83.   12. I write unto you, little children, because your sins are
  84. forgiven you for his name's sake.
  85.  
  86.   13. I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is
  87. from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have
  88. overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children,
  89. because ye have known the Father.
  90.  
  91.   14. I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him
  92. that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men,
  93. because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye
  94. have overcome the wicked one.
  95.  
  96.   15. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the
  97. world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in
  98. him.
  99.  
  100.   16. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the
  101. lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but
  102. is of the world.
  103.  
  104.   17. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he
  105. that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
  106.  
  107.   18. Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard
  108. that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists;
  109. whereby we know that it is the last time.
  110.  
  111.   19. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they
  112. had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but
  113. they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not
  114. all of us.
  115.  
  116.   20. But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all
  117. things.
  118.  
  119.   21. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth,
  120. but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
  121.  
  122.   22. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ?
  123. He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
  124.  
  125.   23. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he
  126. that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
  127.  
  128.   24. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from
  129. the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning
  130. shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the
  131. Father.
  132.  
  133.   25. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even
  134. eternal life.
  135.  
  136.   26. These things have I written unto you concerning them that
  137. seduce you.
  138.  
  139.   27. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in
  140. you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same
  141. anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie,
  142. and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
  143.  
  144.   28. And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall
  145. appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at
  146. his coming.
  147.  
  148.   29. If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that
  149. doeth righteousness is born of him.

  152.                             CHAPTER 3

  154.  
  155.   1. Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us,
  156. that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world
  157. knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
  158.  
  159.   2. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet
  160. appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear,
  161. we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
  162.  
  163.   3. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself,
  164. even as he is pure.
  165.  
  166.   4. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin
  167. is the transgression of the law.
  168.  
  169.   5. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and
  170. in him is no sin.
  171.  
  172.   6. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath
  173. not seen him, neither known him.
  174.  
  175.   7. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth
  176. righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
  177.  
  178.   8. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth
  179. from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was
  180. manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
  181.  
  182.   9. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed
  183. remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
  184.  
  185.   10. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children
  186. of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,
  187. neither he that loveth not his brother.
  188.  
  189.   11. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning,
  190. that we should love one another.
  191.  
  192.   12. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his
  193. brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were
  194. evil, and his brother's righteous.
  195.  
  196.   13. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
  197.  
  198.   14. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we
  199. love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in
  200. death.
  201.  
  202.   15. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that
  203. no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
  204.  
  205.   16. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his
  206. life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
  207.  
  208.   17. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have
  209. need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how
  210. dwelleth the love of God in him?
  211.  
  212.   18. My little children, let us not love in word, neither in
  213. tongue; but in deed and in truth.
  214.  
  215.   19. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall
  216. assure our hearts before him.
  217.  
  218.   20. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart,
  219. and knoweth all things.
  220.  
  221.   21. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we
  222. confidence toward God.
  223.  
  224.   22. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep
  225. his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his
  226. sight.
  227.  
  228.   23. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the
  229. name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us
  230. commandment.
  231.  
  232.   24. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he
  233. in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit
  234. which he hath given us.

  237.                             CHAPTER 4
  238.  
  239.  
  240.   1. Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits
  241. whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out
  242. into the world.
  243.  
  244.   2. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that
  245. confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
  246.  
  247.   3. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is
  248. come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of
  249. antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even
  250. now already is it in the world.
  251.  
  252.   4. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them:
  253. because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the
  254. world.
  255.  
  256.   5. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and
  257. the world heareth them.
  258.  
  259.   6. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not
  260. of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the
  261. spirit of error.
  262.  
  263.   7. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and
  264. every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
  265.  
  266.   8. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
  267.  
  268.   9. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because
  269. that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might
  270. live through him.
  271.  
  272.   10. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us,
  273. and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
  274.  
  275.   11. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one
  276. another.
  277.  
  278.   12. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another,
  279. God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
  280.  
  281.   13. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because
  282. he hath given us of his Spirit.
  283.  
  284.   14. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son
  285. to be the Saviour of the world.
  286.  
  287.   15. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God
  288. dwelleth in him, and he in God.
  289.  
  290.   16. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us.
  291. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God
  292. in him.
  293.  
  294.   17. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness
  295. in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
  296.  
  297.   18. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear:
  298. because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in
  299. love.
  300.  
  301.   19. We love him, because he first loved us.
  302.  
  303.   20. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a
  304. liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how
  305. can he love God whom he hath not seen?
  306.  
  307.   21. And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth
  308. God love his brother also.

  310.  
  311.                             CHAPTER 5
  312.  
  313.  
  314.   1. Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God:
  315. and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is
  316. begotten of him.
  317.  
  318.   2. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we
  319. love God, and keep his commandments.
  320.  
  321.   3. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments:
  322. and his commandments are not grievous.
  323.  
  324.   4. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this
  325. is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
  326.  
  327.   5. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth
  328. that Jesus is the Son of God?
  329.  
  330.   6. This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ;
  331. not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit
  332. that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
  333.  
  334.   7. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father,
  335. the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
  336.  
  337.   8. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit,
  338. and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
  339.  
  340.   9. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is
  341. greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of
  342. his Son.
  343.  
  344.   10. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in
  345. himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because
  346. he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
  347.  
  348.   11. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal
  349. life, and this life is in his Son.
  350.  
  351.   12. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son
  352. of God hath not life.
  353.  
  354.   13. These things have I written unto you that believe on the
  355. name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal
  356. life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
  357.  
  358.   14. And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we
  359. ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
  360.  
  361.   15. And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know
  362. that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
  363.  
  364.   16. If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto
  365. death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin
  366. not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he
  367. shall pray for it.
  368.  
  369.   17. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto
  370. death.
  371.  
  372.   18. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he
  373. that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one
  374. toucheth him not.
  375.  
  376.   19. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in
  377. wickedness.
  378.  
  379.   20. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us
  380. an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in
  381. him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true
  382. God, and eternal life.
  383.  
  384.   21. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
  385.
